Five generations of Carolina energy
Edisto Gas is a wholly owned subsidiary of Keenan Energy, one of the oldest continuously operating family businesses in Columbia. Our family has been serving South Carolina since 1884.

From pine trees to propane
More than 140 years of family business in South Carolina.
Naval stores in Columbia
William J. Keenan Sr. comes to Columbia from Charleston as a naval stores merchant, selling turpentine, rosin, pitch, and tar from pine land off Monticello Road. That land is still in our family today.

Into the fuel business
After serving in World War I, his son W.J. "Billy" Keenan Jr. joins the business. Columbia Petroleum is incorporated, selling lubricants, fuel oil, and kerosene from Lady and Pulaski Street. Our phone number was 488.

Propane comes to Orangeburg
Edisto Gas starts delivering propane in Orangeburg, SC.

Home on Beltline
Keenan Oil Company is established at 3923 West Beltline Blvd., where we still are today, with Richard "Shiney" Keenan as president. The business grows into home heating oil, wholesale gasoline, tires, batteries and accessories, and service stations.

Billy KeenanW.J. "Billy" Keenan II
Billy Keenan led Keenan Energy Company as president from 1990 to 2021. He gave the company its name and guided it for more than three decades before handing the business to his sons, Joe and Palmer. The way we take care of our customers, our employees, and our community today carries on what he built.

Carolina owned. Not Wall Street.
Edisto Gas is owned outright by fifth-generation Joe and Palmer Keenan. No outside investors, just a Carolina family taking care of Carolina customers, the same way we have for five generations.
